Mother Blessings
All around the world mamas-to-be are deeply respected and celebrated as they are the gateway through which our precious future generations enter the world.
In our Maori culture here in Aotearoa, there is so much reverence for our mamas, for they represent the essence of life itself. The womb is referred to as whare tangata, meaning the "house of humanity." The placenta shares the same name as the land, whenua. And hapu encompasses both pregnancy and clan. There is much wisdom embedded in the Maori culture and other indigenous cultures around life and birth that we can take with us into ceremony.
A Mother Blessing gives the sisters and wise women in your life space to nurture your body, mind, heart and soul as you journey towards the birth portal and into postpartum. It honours the sacred beginnings that are about to unfold, and offers essential encouragement, care, and wisdom for what’s to come.
A Mothers Blessing offers a beautiful alternative to a traditional baby shower, to connect, share and feel ready for labour and birth. Mother Blessings are designed and facilitated to serve each woman's desires, beliefs, traditions and community.
A Mother Blessing could look like:
• Creating an alter and inviting your wahine to bring a wee token for you.
• Sitting in circle and asking your wahine to give a blessing to you (could be a poem, a letter, a story) and connect your wrists with thread that will stay on until your pēpi is born.
• Meditation to connect with our wombs, lineage of ancestors, the matriarchal line, recognising the inner and outer strengths engendered by our foremothers in pregnancy, birth and in daily life.
• Gentle positive birth storytelling to inspire and help you feel ready for your rite of passage.
• Belly art, painting a mandala on your tum, massage, sacred touch.
I can also offer yoga, sound journeys and/or cacao ceremony as additions to this special blessingway if desired.
Exchange:
$350 - full morning or afternoon ceremony
$250 - 1.5 hour morning or afternoon ceremony
I recommend that your wahine put in a koha to contribute to your blessing. Alternatively, this is a lovely gift for a mama-to-be!
